Alcalá de Henares

Alcalá de Henares.... a little bit of history... I wish I were there!!!

Alcalá de Henares is a small city located in the middle of the Iberian Peninsula at the southwest of Europe. It is also located in the oriental sector of the Community of Madrid, next to the Henares river.

Romans used to name Alcalá de Henares as the Complutum city; it also became the Episcopal See at the Visigoth period. The city was destroyed (1.000 AC) and rebuilt (1.083) by the Muslims who constructed an alcazar that gave the modern name of the city. In 1348, the king Alfsonso XI, the Austere, created Alcalá.

In 1498, Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros founded the University of Alcalá de Henares. This university has become one of the most important superior learning places in Spain.

In 1836, the University was moved to Madrid, but nowadays there are two extensions, the University Complutense of Madrid and the University of Alcalá de Henares.

Alcalá is also knows for its writers and monarchs. Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, the famous author of “El Quijote de la Mancha” was born there.

The city has amazing monuments such as the magisterial church, The Monastery of Saint Bernardo, the house-museum of Cervantes, the Antezana hospital, or the building of the University (San Ildefonso).

The university campus and the downtown of Alcalá de Henares were declared World Heritage Site in 1998.

According with the last census from 2001, its population is 176.434 habitants.
